They are working towards the same agendas and the false left/right paradigm to confuse the public and mask the works of a hidden controlling few. (Dictatorship) In short i'm really not surprise you have script reading puppets like Collen Powell supporting the NWO front man Obama. Obama want's to limit your guns. Obama wants to make CO2 a deadly/harmful/toxic gas Obama/McCain want "Cap n Trade" (companies buying carbon credits from the banks) A world financial system or a world government run by the World Banks (IMF World Bank) is the goal and after that it gets a lot more fun. and it's not socialism you dipshit. The US government and the Fed Reserve are privatizing the profits and "socializing" the losses. It's fascism/corporatism. The popular talk at my college is that, both presidents will get shot. Why? Obama - He's black, so any white man would want to go down in history as the person that killed the first black President of the United States. McCain - He wants to shut down institutes for the disabled and handicapped (aka blind, deaf people, such as me). If he succeeds in doing so, there will be an angry population of deaf students visiting several weaponsmiths and shooting ranges.

I suppose any assortment of legal sidearms would be effective against looters, thieves, and what have you, but if someone with the requisite measure of power made a move your pistols, shotguns, and hunting rifles wouldn't make much of a difference.
