Perhaps you may engender greater discourse if you were to establish your terms. Why do you choose the term "beast" and why do you feel this way about Mr. Hitchens. Please provide references for other individuals who may be unaware of who he is and his positions various subjects. |

"Neo-Con author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, a former Trotskyite turned staunch Iraq war proponent, underwent the lightest form of waterboarding possible and at the end of it still concluded, “Believe Me, It’s Torture”. - No Shit? Hitchens water "In this pregnant darkness, head downward, I waited for a while until I abruptly felt a slow cascade of water going up my nose. Determined to resist if only for the honor of my navy ancestors who had so often been in peril on the sea, I held my breath for a while and then had to exhale and—as you might expect—inhale in turn. The inhalation brought the damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge, wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly clamped over my face. Unable to determine whether I was breathing in or out, and flooded more with sheer panic than with mere water, I triggered the pre-arranged signal and felt the unbelievable relief of being pulled upright and having the soaking and stifling layers pulled off me. I find I don’t want to tell you how little time I lasted." Something tells me that the poor Afgan goat herders we send to GITMO get it so easy. Edited by Casino, Oct 16 2008, 10:24 PM.

While he is fairly conservative I would hardly call him a Neo-con |

My point was not so much his political views as it concerned his views regarding religion and how it is a detriment to society. I had watched a few of his debates with random talking heads etc. Concerning religion and it just made me laugh how he utterly makes people look stupid in most of his debates. Im at the college at the moment so I'm unable to post youtube links to the individual debates I was watching, but when I get home I'll track down a few. Another documentary I watched earlier this week was Keith Allen will burn in hell, which was pretty hillarious. He basically goes around antogonizing the Westboro Baptist Church for a week or so. Every once in a while i get in an odd debate and documentary mood. By beast, I mean the guy is just outright awesome, I don't agree with him all the time, but it's always funny to see someone's political tv show hijacked by a guest who is better prepared and quicker witted. Out of the 6 or 7 debates/appearances Ive seen him participate in, I don't think ive ever seen him stumped or even deterred by any argument. This the point at which im sure Casino will provide videos of him being soundly trounced in a debate lawls. Edited by Ordain, Oct 17 2008, 12:28 PM.

Well I would STRONGLY urge you to go buy "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" by Hitchens. In addition to being an excellent example of the beauty of the English language (he is truly a spectacular writer), the book lays out the dangers of religion in society. If you are looking for other sources to be able to intelligently debate with those who are unwilling to accept the truths of the world. I would suggest finding and watching "The Genius of Charles Darwin." It was a program produced and hosted by Richard Dawkins. If you have any questions about the biology behind it feel free to ask and I will try to explain or point you to a resource that would clarify it. If you desire to know more after that I would suggest you read "Consciousness Explained" by Daniel Dennett. |

Hitchens is my favorite recent "Popular Atheist" author. Of the recent authors, above Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and others... this guy has a real bite to him. He's intentionally not as tactful or gentle. He doesn't sugar coat anything. He goes for the jugular as fast as possible and crushes his opponents in the most devastating ways he can... Fucking Love It. |
