I recently had the opportunity to talk with my parents and happened upon something really interesting/valuable. My dad who does roof repair and installation/general contracting had mentioned that one of the homes he had worked at had lost its resident. The old man had passed away and his family had picked through his belongings and left everything else on the curb to be thrown away. My dad has always had an eye for things that might be valuable and noticed some books lying there next to the rest of the things to be thrown out. He grabbed em and brought them home and put them in his bookcases where he does all his drafting and blueprints. Well this morning I was talking to him and asked about the books, and he said to go ahead and take a look at them and to my surprise, we have....

The song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Hardbound dated 1902, has a signature in very light pencil on the yellow pages which SEEM to indicate it was given to someone as a present.(The writing is VERY faded as the book is over 105 years old). Longfellow originally allowed this book to be published in 1855, making this book, as far as I can tell, an early edition as far as old books go.

The other is a hardbound collection of classic poems compiled by Professor Francis T. Palgrave, and published posthumously. Palgrave was a professor of poetry at oxford in the 1800s. It has some notation in the inner front pages that it was a gift from a Professor M.E. Hurley to one of his graduating students, a Leonard F. Dozin, signed and Dated June 7th 1910. As far as I can tell, this book was bound in 1891, or somewhere near there according to the research I've done this morning online regarding when the publishing company was actively producing this book.

Anyways, while this may be boring to some of you, it feels amazing to actually have something older then my great-great grandparents sitting on my desk in front of me, with signatures that are nearly 110 years old in one case. Im going to take the books down to have them appraised this week or next week just to see what they might be worth. (Don't worry winter, Im not gonna sell them, im just curious.) Just thought that I might share this interesting piece of history with the rest of you, since several members of the guild always seem to be greatly interested in historical/political and scientific endeavors.

edited for validating dates.

Cool stuff man. I have a growing collection of antique books. There's a book fair twice a year in Gainesville, FL and I usually pick up one or two of the oldies (about all I can afford). WTB University of Louisville's first edition Moby Dick.

Treasures truly. One of my most prised possessions is my great grandfather's bible. It is from the 1880s and in German. While I am an Atheist, it gives me a sense of family history.

Thats cool. I own a few books from the 70s, For some reason I like the way old paper feels on my fingers.
I am war, I am pain
I am all you've ever slain
I am tears in your eyes
I am grief, I am lies.

thanks for the tip, Casino.
