A website was made where you can check the status of whether or not the LHC has destroyed the world. http://hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/ |

The total cost of the project is anticipated to reach €7.2 billion. Edit: Also, you are a dickhead for making a post just to correct something you didn't even google. Edited by meanrock, Sep 10 2008, 04:06 PM.

that is an amazing picture, ive followed the LHC somewhat and it looks like it could do some amazing things. But I never pictured two giant hardons travelling at 99.999997% the speed of light colliding. |

I just don't see how a couple of protons could have enough energy/mass to destroy the planet. |

There are rumors that it could end up creating a black hole. |

I lol'd when I saw that people had gone through the legal system to try and stop them. Obviously they wouldnt be messing with it if there was any chance of it happening. Unless physicists want to destroy the planet so it can be completely understood. Men with long white beards are srz bisniz. |

It's pretty possibel for them to create a micro-black hole, which really wouldn't harm anything |
![]() Reality is that, which when we cease to believe in it, still exists. | |

I'm actually going into astrophysics or theoretical physics. I haven't decided which brach yet They (CERN) are basing their assumptions that a micro black hole isn't dangerous on the theory of Hawking radiation, and the existence of it has never been observed, and was fairly recently theorized (1974). We don't even know if a micro black hole would be rotating, which also plays a part in the theory of Hawking radiation. The physicists at CERN have confirmed that a micro black hole *could* be created, but they say it's nothing to worry about because of Hawking radiation. Seems to me they're banking too much on a theoretical concept. The UK has giving the calculation of it around 1 in 50 million. All in all, the scientists at CERN are dealing with forces that we know nearly nothing about, and seeing as the idea of science is that it's ever evolving, everything we know could be completely wrong. In that case, when you're messing with powerful forces, it's probably best to wait until you have a wealth of understanding on the subject. Which, sadly, at this current time we do not, which is why there's such a heated debate on this matter. The most there is to be worried about is the concept of creating a micro black hole. I'm really not worried about the strangelets, magnetic monopoles and vacuum bubbles. I'm interested if any more information is learned on the subject of the Higgs boson particle and the theory of other dimensions, the later of which would help explain why gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, below strong nuclear, weak nuclear, and the electromagnetic force (which doesn't interact with dark matter, another thing they're hoping to study with this project). As a science major, I'm torn on what they're aiming to do. On one hand, I'm a total geek and I would love to see gravity's relatively weak force explained, along with other things, but I'm also against experiments on things we as humans have no real understanding on. |

A bunch of people hacked the CERN site a few days ago and just released the details. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2008/09/12/scicern312.xml I can't believe they can't even keep their computers safe. Fucking morons. |
