The CEO of the world's biggest video game company's obviously feeling pretty good about himself. John Riccitiello runs Electronic Arts. Last month, EA offered $2 billion to buy its smaller rival Take Two Interactive. That would give EA the hottest game title this year: Grand Theft Auto 4. But Riccitiello's got his eye on bigger things. He told London's Financial Times yesterday he thinks Hollywood needs gamers more than gamers need Hollywood. That could be true. Hollywood does use game ideas for movies sometimes, but now gamers have started making movies out of the games themselves. They call it "machinima" -- machine and cinema run together. David Chong reports it's fun and games only 'til the lawyers get involved. Link to read the story/ see the website. Just Listen to the Story. |

Heh. I like how they talk about it like it's some emerging new thing. And I still say the Return movie/trailers are the best example of machinima, mostly because of what they managed to do with editing and lighting given the limited emoting/posturing/facial movement capabilities of WoW. As gay as the music is, this is my favorite SWG one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcIYYB5k6GE Really showcases how many emotes there were and how there were so many casual outfits you could wear just to get a certain look or feel for your character. (RP OMG) But still, complete lack of dialog, but it's able to easily tell a story, just from emotes and outfits. Fairly impressive. |

Yes, and it was supposed to be made into a sequel. Some of us, I'm sure, saw how that turned out. |

I think you missed the point of the news story in the OP. |

The sequel was incredibly watered down (universal ammo wtf?!). |
