"You can rely much better on your psychic reasoning.. then on your... head"

I think a lot of people turn to religions and spirituality for the same reason we play video games, they are fun and interesting and take up free time.

I think a lot of people can't deal with figuring out their own reason for living, they think they are incapable of creating one for themselves. So, they turn to a "higher power" which has passed down its higher meaning.

I really liked this thread, thanks for posting.

I'm only a half hour into this one. but, LOL

"you are confusing the idea of god with denominational beliefs"

... no the interpretations of the "word of god" (bible) would be the enactment of "god’s" morality and teachings.

All of the teachings of the bible are what people directly associate with "god." So, either you throw out the bible and say it is not the teachings of "god" in order to save him some face or you recognize he is party to all the atrocities carried out in his name. So he is in other words a mass murdering fuck head or he is about as close to an imaginary friend as you can get.

It’s not that I’m against religion I grew up in the Lutheran church, I go to a liberal Jesuit catholic college (Seattle University), and I have received A grades in both of my theology courses (God and Evil, and revelation theology). If you are going to somehow talk about “god’s” greatness you need to examine the whole package… there’s a reason why drugs must have their side effects cataloged.

Christopher Hitchens doesnt really even have to talk, Al Sharpton is owning himself.

I'm about as anti-religious as they come.

Tantum religio potuit suadere malorum
(To such heights of evil are men driven by religion.)
~Lucretius, De Rerum Natura

Quote:

His aversion to religion, in the sense usually attached to the term, was one of the same kind with that of Lucretius: he regarded it with the feelings due not to a mere mental delusion, but to a great moral evil.  He looked upon it as the greatest enemy of morality: first, by setting up factitious excellencies - belief in creeds, devotional feelings, and ceremonies, not connected with the good of human kind - and causing these to be accepted as substitutes for genuine virtue: but above all, by radically vitiating the standard of morals; making it consist in doing the will of a being, on whom it lavishes indeed all the phrases of adulation, but whom in sober truth it depicts as eminently hateful.

~ John Stuart Mill (on his father, in The Autobiography)

Yes, LOL@Sharpton indeed.

You sir just summed up that debate better than I ever could have. I must say I did LOL pretty hard because you summed it all up.

Al Sharpton was basically arguing that the bible has nothing to do with "God."

Lutheran eh? If I say Garason Kealer you think?

Lutheran eh?

Oh my bad, In my post I meant that I wasn't taking that stance from a non-religious point of view. I'm an atheist now, I dropped out of confirmation despite the fact that my mom was teaching it when I was in jr. high (in all honesty my mom was the shit, she used to have people in the church ask her if they should get married and she would give them a condom and say "screw them first then decide”, and she's pretty much an atheist now too).

My problem is I really don’t like stupid religious people, which unfortunately are the great majority of religious people. But, as I stated in an earlier post I think most people would prefer to be told what is right then to go through the more complicated process of figuring it out for themselves.
